On Saturday, March 21, the team traveled to Kansas City to play Park Hill South. Originally this match was scheduled to be a District match and would count towards Jefferson City qualifying for the state tournament. However, due to some scheduling conflicts and a large number of Park Hill South's players being on Spring Break, the coaches agreed to reschedule the District match and instead play a "friendly." PHS managed to put together 15 of their own players, and Jefferson City traveled light to the match with only 17 players due to the Missouri Military Academy's Spring Break.

Jefferson City started out the match a little flat (probably due to the travel time before the game) and had a few defensive mistakes. A penalty near our own try zone resulted in PHS kicking in for 3 points in the 7th minute. Jefferson City fought back though, and after controlling the ball for a large period of time managed to punch in a try on a long run from captain Joseph Bustamante. Michael Townley, the honorary co-captain for the match, converted the try to put Jefferson City up 7-3. The match went back and forth for the remainder of the half, with Jefferson City failing to capitalize on several opportunities. PHS received a yellow card for dangerous play (high tackle) after several warnings from the ref, and in the final minute of the half Joseph Bustamante scored his second try of the day on another solo run - making the score 12-3 going into the second half.

Jefferson City again started out slow to begin the second half; but a strong defensive stance in their own half brought them back on the attack rather quickly, resulting in another try for Bustamante in the 40th minute. PHS answered with a converted try in the 50th minute, bringing the score to 17-10 in favor of Jefferson City. Shortly thereafter, a Jefferson City player, despite receiving no warnings from the referee (a courtesy extended to PHS), was sent off for 10 minutes for dangerous play (high tackle). The teams went back and forth for some time after that, and an injury to a PHS player gave Jefferson City a numbers advantage. The forwards took the opportunity to run some bruising crashes and brought the team down into PHS' half. A bit of back and forth between several players resulted in a Jefferson City player being binned for 10 minutes while PHS' captain received a red card for punching that Jefferson City player and was forced to leave the match. A short time later, Andrew Bennett gave a great effort to score another try for Jefferson City in the 60th minute, driving through several PHS players on his way to the try zone. Joseph Bustamante followed that up in quick succession with his 4th try of the day in the 64th minute, bringing the score to 27-10. PHS finished the game strong with a try of their own in the 67th minute, making the final score 27-15 in favor of Jefferson City.

Overall, our boys played strong and controlled the majority of the play. They had some trouble getting moving at the beginning of the match and to start the second half, but they quickly picked up their play and were tenacious about getting after the ball. The defense for the most part was excellent, and several players had great individual runs. The biggest issues the team had were making simple mistakes when we were starting to put something together and individuals trying to do too much on their own instead of using their teammates and playing as a team. We will work on these things in the weeks to come and hopefully be even stronger heading into our home matches against DeSmet and Eureka in April.
